A chapter in light and place.

California light has an unusual clarity. Near the end of the day, warm colour can move across distant land with such intensity that the landscape appears briefly transformed.

What remained in memory was the contrast between the glowing sky and the quieter forms below it. The scene felt expansive, but its emotion came from a narrow interval of light that lasted only moments.

The painting was developed around a warm understructure, allowing red, orange and gold to emerge through cooler passages rather than sit separately on the surface.

The land was simplified to support the sky, with directional knife marks creating movement without distracting from the central transition of colour.

California landscape

Experience before interpretation.

The photograph records a place. The painting preserves what remained after distance, time and memory had altered it.

Living with the work.

A California Sunset is an atmospheric statement work whose warmth and open horizon make it a natural companion to paintings from the American West.
