A chapter in light and place.

Across the American West, evening arrives with a scale that is difficult to describe. The horizon widens, colour deepens and the land becomes a dark, quiet counterpoint to the sky.

This painting grew from the memory of watching daylight withdraw slowly rather than disappear. The final colour seemed to hover above the landscape, suspended between day and night.

The composition was reduced to its essential relationships: a low, dark land mass and a sky carrying the remaining light.

Thin layers create luminosity, while a few heavier marks prevent the painting from becoming entirely ethereal. The simplicity is deliberate; the emotion lies in the transition.

American West at dusk

Experience before interpretation.

The journey photograph is a record of place. The finished painting is an interpretation shaped by time, memory and the physical language of paint.

Living with the work.

Dusk in the West II is a distilled, atmospheric work that pairs naturally with other paintings from the American West and nocturne collections.

The original should be supplied signed and accompanied by a certificate of authenticity. Framing, delivery and collection details can be discussed directly with the studio.
