THE JOURNEY
Salt lakes possess an unusual stillness. The horizon stretches almost without interruption, and reflected light can make the distinction between land, water and sky uncertain.
What stayed with me was the sense of openness—a place reduced to colour, atmosphere and an almost abstract division of space.
IN THE STUDIO
The painting was simplified into broad tonal fields, with subtle shifts in temperature creating distance and luminosity.
Texture was used sparingly so the stillness would remain intact, while the surface retained enough variation to reward close viewing.
WHERE IT BEGAN
The photograph records a place. The painting preserves what remained after distance, time and memory had altered it.
